Creative Commitment Phobia
I now have a folder on my phone called “Suzie Album Mixes.” It contains 14 songs that are more or less complete. You know what that means?
It’s time to commit.
But wait wait wait!
First, I need to make sure it’s really really ready. You know? So now I’m paying attention to details I’ve never paid attention to before, some necessary, some definitely a little extra:
Is the vocal too quiet in this part?
Does it sound like I’m saying “hammock” instead of “panic”?
Is this ear candy drum thingamabob too loud?
Does it sound like I’m singing or like I’m eating a sandwich?
Creative Commitment Phobia
Right before you commit to something BIG, an impossible amount of self doubt swoops in to undermine all the choices you've made up leading up to that point.
How inconvenient.
It’s really exciting to see the finish line, but it’s also scary to call any creative work “done.” Once a creative work is done, there are no more excuses, no more caveats, no more disclaimers to fall back on. The door for criticism and judgement is open, and it’s time to face the world, exposed and unprotected.
Truthfully, I am really excited to be done with this phase. It’s been a lot of long hours getting these songs to where they are now, and I’m excited for whatever comes next. But what comes next? Hmm…
“Higher” is out now!
In the meantime, The Narrative released the 4th and final song on the New Anxieties EP. All 4 songs from the EP are out in the world, and you can stream them all to your hearts content.
Higher was the most collaborative track on the EP, starting out as an instrumental that Jesse sent me which I initially top-lined, and then we both got together to write the melodies and lyrics. It’s a little 80's inspired and my favorite part is the guitar solo and fadeout at the end.
While you’re at it, you should also stream Soren’s first single, “Dream That I Die” which came out on Enci Records and showcases his phenomenal voice and writing capabilities. So grateful to call this wonderful human a close friend and enthusiastic supporter of my own creativity.
Short and sweet today, kids! Enjoy your weekend and I’ll catch up with you after Spring break!
